Private Label

A supermarket shelf holds a cereal box carrying the store’s own name rather than a national manufacturer’s brand. That product is private label. The retailer commissions the goods and sells them under its exclusive brand.

Private-label items usually offer lower prices than national brands while delivering comparable quality. They improve retailer margin and strengthen differentiation because the same product cannot be found at competitors. Development requires volume commitments, quality control, and packaging design.

Some private labels aim for basic value; others target premium tiers. Successful programs build customer trust in the store brand itself. Private label has grown into a major share of sales in many grocery and general merchandise categories.

When customers prefer the store’s own brand, the retailer gains both loyalty and margin.
