🗺️ User Journey

A map of the steps a user takes to accomplish a goal.

User Journey

A user journey maps the steps a person takes to accomplish a goal with a product or service. It starts before they open the app and ends after they have achieved what they came for, or given up. The map shows each touchpoint: the ad that caught their attention, the search result, the signup form, the confirmation email. It also notes how the person feels at each stage. Frustrated. Confused. Relieved. Delighted.

Teams build journey maps from research. They interview users, watch them use the product, and trace the paths people actually take, not the ones designers assumed. The map often reveals gaps. A user might abandon a purchase because the shipping cost appears too late. Or they might call support because the FAQ is buried. Journey maps make these problems visible and give teams a shared reference for fixing them.

What a journey map includes

A journey map is not a flowchart. It is a story about what it feels like to be the user, and where the experience breaks down.
