Valoarea la care se apropie o funcție pe măsură ce intrarea se apropie de un punct.

Limită

O limită descrie ce face o funcție în apropierea unui punct, nu neapărat în acel punct. Pe măsură ce x se apropie de 2, funcția f(x) = (x² − 4)/(x − 2) se apropie de 4, chiar dacă funcția este nedefinită la x = 2. Limita este 4.

Limitele sunt fundamentul calculului. Derivatele sunt definite ca limite ale coeficienților diferenți. Integralele sunt limite ale sumelor. Continuitatea este definită prin limite: o funcție este continuă într-un punct dacă limita este egală cu valoarea funcției în acel punct.

Limitele pot fi unilaterale, infinite sau la infinit. Definiția formală epsilon-delta, dezvoltată de Cauchy și Weierstrass, a făcut calculul riguros. Fără limite, calculul s-ar baza pe noțiuni vagi de „apropiere”. Conceptul este subtil, dar esențial.
