制限

極限とは、関数が特定の点においてではなく、その近傍においてどのような値をとるかを表すものです。関数 f(x) = (x² − 4)/(x − 2) は、x = 2 では定義されていませんが、x が 2 に近づくにつれて 4 に近づきます。極限値は 4 です。

極限は微積分学の基礎です。導関数は差分商の極限として定義されます。積分は和の極限です。連続性は極限によって定義されます。関数は、ある点において極限が関数の値と等しい場合に連続であると言えます。

極限は、片側極限、無限極限、または無限大極限のいずれかである。コーシーとワイエルシュトラスによって開発されたイプシロン・デルタの厳密な定義によって、微積分は厳密なものとなった。極限がなければ、微積分は「近づく」という曖昧な概念に依拠することになるだろう。この概念は微妙ではあるが、不可欠である。
