🌱 Horticulture

The science and art of growing fruits, vegetables, and ornamentals.

Horticulture

Horticulture is the intensive side of farming. Where agronomy deals in hectares of wheat and maize, horticulture deals in orchards, vegetable plots, nurseries, and greenhouses, often on smaller ground worked at higher value per square metre.

The word comes from the Latin hortus, a garden, and cultura, cultivation. It splits into several branches: pomology for fruit, olericulture for vegetables, floriculture for flowers, arboriculture for trees, and viticulture for grapes.

What horticulturists do

Horticulture is labour-heavy, which is why it clusters where workers are available and where consumers will pay for freshness. A tomato grown for a local market can be picked ripe. One shipped across an ocean has to be bred for toughness as much as taste.
