Rules cannot cover every situation. Values are the core principles that guide an organization’s behavior and decisions when no one is watching and when trade-offs are hard.
Stated values might include integrity, customer focus, respect, or innovation. They influence hiring, recognition, and what leaders tolerate. Hypocrisy—proclaiming values while rewarding opposite behavior—destroys trust faster than having no stated values at all.
Living values show up in difficult choices: walking away from profitable but unethical business, protecting a colleague who surfaces bad news, or investing in long-term quality over short-term margin. Organizations that hire and promote for values alignment build coherent cultures over time.

- Shape decisions under pressure and ambiguity
- Must be reinforced by recognition and consequences
- Lose force when contradicted by leadership actions
