👑 Authority

The legitimate power to make decisions and give orders.

Authority

Orders carry weight only when the giver has the right to issue them. Authority is the legitimate power to make decisions, allocate resources, and direct the actions of others within an organization.

It flows from formal position, from expertise, or from the consent of those who follow. Hierarchical charts map positional authority, yet real influence often diverges from the boxes and lines. Managers who rely solely on rank without competence or fairness quickly discover the limits of their formal power.

Clear authority speeds decisions; ambiguous authority produces delay and conflict. Organizations periodically redesign reporting lines to match strategy and to keep decision rights close to the information needed to exercise them well.

Legitimate power to decide and order. Consent of the governed is what separates it from pure force for many theorists.

Having it is different from people accepting it. Earned respect lasts longer than positional power alone.
