🌿 Herb

A plant grown for flavor, medicine, or fragrance.

Herb

Herbs are plants valued for their flavor, fragrance, or medicinal properties rather than for bulk food. Most are aromatic, containing essential oils in leaves, stems, or flowers. Culinary herbs such as basil, thyme, and rosemary transform ordinary cooking; medicinal herbs have long traditions of use; aromatic herbs scent gardens and homes.

Many herbs prefer well-drained soil and full sun. Mediterranean species such as lavender and oregano thrive in poorer soils and resent overwatering. Soft-leaved herbs like basil need richer conditions and consistent moisture. Most are easy to grow in pots or beds and respond well to regular harvesting.

Harvesting actually encourages bushier growth. Snip stems just above a leaf pair. Fresh herbs have the brightest flavor; many also dry or freeze successfully for later use. A small herb garden near the kitchen door is one of the most practical plantings a gardener can make.
