Direct Marketing

Direct marketing reaches consumers directly without intermediaries. It includes mail, email, telemarketing, text messages, and targeted online ads. The defining feature is that the marketer communicates with the individual consumer, not through a mass medium. The goal is usually a measurable response: a purchase, a click, a call, a sign-up.

Direct marketing has a long history. Mail-order catalogs date back to the 19th century. Sears, Roebuck and Company built an empire on them. The technique evolved into telemarketing, then email, then personalized digital advertising. What stayed constant is the focus on direct response. Direct marketers care about conversion rates and cost per acquisition, not brand impressions.

The industry has a reputation problem. Direct mail is often called junk mail. Telemarketing is widely disliked. Email marketing is plagued by spam. Regulations like the Telephone Consumer Protection Act and the CAN-SPAM Act set boundaries, but the volume remains high. The most effective direct marketing is permission-based. It targets people who have opted in and offers something relevant. Without relevance, it is just noise.
