A woman gets a call from her child's school while she is leading a board meeting. She cannot be in both places. Role conflict is the tension that arises when the expectations of different roles clash. It happens when the demands of one status interfere with the demands of another.
Role conflict is different from role strain, which is difficulty meeting the demands of a single role. A nurse who has too many patients is experiencing role strain. A nurse who is also a mother and cannot stay late for a shift is experiencing role conflict.
Common examples
- Working parent: job demands vs. family demands
- Student athlete: practice vs. study time
- Caregiver employee: sick parent vs. work deadlines
- Religious professional: faith values vs. institutional rules
People manage role conflict by setting priorities, negotiating with others, and sometimes exiting a role. Workplaces that offer flexible schedules and paid leave reduce conflict. Countries with strong family policies have lower rates of work-family conflict. It is not just a personal problem. It is a structural one.
