🧘 Yoga

A Hindu spiritual and ascetic discipline.

Yoga

Yoga is a discipline of body, breath, and mind aimed at stilling the fluctuations of consciousness. The word means “yoking” or “union,” and in classical Indian thought it names both the goal and the method of achieving it.

The foundational text is the Yoga Sutras of Patanjali, which outline an eight-limbed path: ethical restraints and observances, posture, breath control, withdrawal of the senses, concentration, meditation, and finally samadhi, absorptive union. Physical postures, asanas, are only one limb; the larger system is a complete way of life. Other forms developed alongside or after Patanjali—hatha yoga with its emphasis on the body and subtle energy, bhakti yoga of devotion, karma yoga of selfless action, jnana yoga of knowledge.

In the modern West, yoga is often reduced to physical exercise and stress reduction. That adaptation has brought benefits to millions, yet it can obscure the original spiritual horizon. Within India and among serious practitioners elsewhere, the full range of practices continues: ethical training, breath work, meditation, and the pursuit of liberation from the cycle of suffering.

At its root, yoga assumes that the ordinary restless mind can be trained, and that the trained mind discovers a deeper stability and clarity already present within.
