🌪️ External Conflict

A struggle between a character and an outside force.

External Conflict

External conflict is a struggle between a character and an outside force. The opposing force may be another character, society, nature, technology, or the supernatural.

A detective pursuing a criminal, a pioneer surviving a blizzard, a citizen challenging an unjust law—all are engaged in external conflict. The opposition is visible and can often be staged or described in concrete terms. External conflict generates plot incidents, raises the stakes, and forces the protagonist to act. It frequently intersects with internal conflict; the outer struggle may trigger or mirror an inner one.

Stories built solely on external conflict can feel shallow if the characters themselves remain unchanged. The most satisfying narratives use the external struggle to test and reveal the protagonist’s values and limits. The resolution of the external conflict—victory, defeat, or compromise—usually coincides with the story’s climax or immediate aftermath.

When the obstacle stands outside the character’s own mind, the conflict is external.
