📦 Product Mix

The total range of products offered by a company.

Product Mix

The full set of products a company offers is its product mix. It includes every product line and every item within those lines. The mix can be described by its width (number of lines), length (total number of items), depth (variants per item), and consistency (how closely related the lines are).

Decisions about the product mix affect risk, resource allocation, and brand perception. A broad mix can serve more customer needs and reduce dependence on any single line; a narrow mix allows deeper expertise and focus. Expanding the mix through new lines or items is a common growth strategy; contracting it is sometimes necessary for profitability or clarity.

The product mix is a strategic portfolio. Managers evaluate it for balance across life-cycle stages, margins, and market segments. Changes in the mix signal shifts in the company’s direction and capabilities. Keeping the mix aligned with customer needs and with the firm’s strengths is an ongoing responsibility of product and brand management.
