Consumers cannot buy what they do not recognize. Brand awareness is the extent to which people can identify a brand under various conditions. Aided awareness measures recognition when the brand name is presented; unaided awareness measures the ability to recall the brand without prompting. Top-of-mind awareness is the first brand that comes to mind in a category.
Awareness is usually the first objective of marketing campaigns for new or lesser-known brands. It is built through repeated exposure in advertising, packaging, sponsorships, and public relations. High awareness does not guarantee preference or purchase, but low awareness almost guarantees invisibility at the moment of choice.
Marketers track awareness with surveys and, increasingly, with digital metrics such as search volume and social mentions. Building awareness is expensive and slow; maintaining it requires ongoing presence. In crowded markets even established brands invest continuously to keep their names salient. Awareness is therefore both a foundation and an ongoing cost of competing.
