Omnichannel

A customer checks inventory on a phone, reserves an item online, tries it on in a store, and later returns it through the mail. When all those steps work together without friction, the retailer is operating as omnichannel. The customer experiences one brand rather than separate channels.

Omnichannel requires shared inventory visibility, consistent pricing and promotion, and systems that recognize the same customer across devices and locations. Fulfillment options such as buy-online-pickup-in-store and ship-from-store become standard. Staff need tools and training to help customers complete journeys that began elsewhere.

True omnichannel is difficult and expensive to achieve, yet customer expectations continue to rise. Retailers that succeed make convenience the default rather than the exception. The old walls between online and physical retail dissolve into a single system organized around the customer.
