🌾 Agriculture

The intensive cultivation of crops and livestock for subsistence or trade.

Agriculture

Roughly 12,000 years ago, people in several parts of the world began planting seeds on purpose and tending animals instead of following wild food. This shift, often called the Neolithic Revolution, did not happen overnight or everywhere at once. It unfolded independently in the Fertile Crescent, China, Mesoamerica, the Andes, and parts of Africa. Each region domesticated its own suite of plants and animals.

Agriculture means intensive cultivation of crops and livestock for subsistence or trade. Compared with foraging, it produces more food per acre, which supports larger populations. It also demands more labor, ties people to fixed plots, and creates surpluses that can be stored, taxed, or traded. Those surpluses fueled cities, armies, and specialized crafts, but they also brought new vulnerabilities: crop failure, soil exhaustion, and epidemic disease.

Consequences

Farming did not simply improve life. It reorganized it, for better and worse.
