🗿 Idol

An image or object worshipped as a deity.

Idol

A carved or cast figure stands in a shrine and receives offerings and prayers. That figure is an idol when worshippers treat it as a deity or as the dwelling of a deity. The practice is ancient and widespread.

Idols give concrete focus to devotion and make the invisible tangible. Critics within monotheistic traditions condemn idolatry as confusion of the creator with created things. Defenders of image use distinguish between reverence for what the image represents and worship of the material object itself. The debate has produced iconoclasm and icon veneration in turn.

Beyond literal statues, religious teachers warn against treating wealth, power, or ideology as functional idols. The term thus expands from physical objects to any finite reality given ultimate allegiance. Physical idols remain central in many living traditions of Asia, Africa, and elsewhere.

An idol concentrates devotion that might otherwise remain diffuse.
