🏛️ Conservatism

A political philosophy favoring tradition and stability.

Conservatism

Political conservatism prizes continuity, inherited institutions, and skepticism toward rapid or utopian change. Conservatives tend to view society as a complex organism that should be reformed cautiously rather than redesigned from abstract principles.

Core themes include respect for tradition, support for established authority, emphasis on personal responsibility, and preference for market arrangements over extensive state direction. Different national traditions produce distinct conservative emphases—religious, nationalist, or free-market. Fusion with classical liberal economics has been especially strong in some countries since the late twentieth century.

Conservatives organize parties, think tanks, and media outlets to defend their priorities. They compete with progressive and socialist movements over the proper scope of government, the pace of social change, and national identity. Like other major ideologies, conservatism adapts to new circumstances while claiming fidelity to enduring principles.

A conservative argument often begins with what has already been shown to work.
