💭 Connotation

An idea or feeling that a word invokes in addition to its literal meaning.

Connotation

Connotation is the cluster of emotional, cultural, or associative meanings that a word carries beyond its literal definition. It is what the word suggests rather than what it strictly denotes.

“Home” denotes a place of residence; it connotes warmth, safety, belonging, or, for some speakers, confinement. “Slim” and “scrawny” may refer to the same body type yet evoke opposite attitudes. Writers choose words for their connotations as much as for their denotations, shaping the reader’s response with every selection. Political language, advertising, and poetry all depend heavily on controlled connotation.

Connotations shift with time, culture, and context. A word that once carried neutral or positive associations may acquire negative ones, and vice versa. Sensitive writers stay alert to these shifts. Dictionaries record denotation; only experience and attention reveal the full range of connotation.

The extra freight of feeling or association that rides along with a word is its connotation.
