😊 User Experience

The overall experience a person has when interacting with a product.

User Experience

User experience covers everything a person feels when interacting with a product, service, or system. It goes beyond the interface. It includes the advertising that brought them there, the speed of the loading screen, the tone of the error message, the ease of returning an item, and the follow-up email. The term was popularized by Don Norman in the 1990s when he worked at Apple. He wanted a label that covered all aspects of a person's interaction with a company, not just the visual design.

UX is often confused with UI. UI is the screen, the buttons, the layout. UX is the whole journey. A beautiful interface can still deliver a poor experience if the product is slow, the support is unhelpful, or the pricing is confusing. Good UX requires research, testing, and cross-functional collaboration. It also requires empathy. Designers must understand what users actually need, not what the team assumes they need.

What shapes UX

UX is not a layer applied at the end. It is a set of decisions made throughout a product's life, from the first sketch to the final update.
