1️⃣ First Language

The language a person learns from birth.

First Language

Most people acquire at least one language without formal lessons. A first language is the language or languages learned from earliest childhood through immersion in a speech community, often called a native language or mother tongue.

Acquisition follows broadly shared developmental paths while reflecting the specific grammar being learned. Sounds, words, grammar, and pragmatic skills emerge in overlapping stages. Children may grow up with two first languages in bilingual homes.

First-language proficiency often remains strongest for emotion and rapid processing, though dominance can shift. Education that builds on a child’s first language supports learning across subjects. The term marks order and early environment of acquisition, not permanent superiority of skill.
