An athlete spins or glides within a circle and releases a heavy metal ball as far as possible into a sector. That event is the shot put. The implement must land within the marked area and the athlete must stay inside the circle until the throw is complete.
Men’s senior shot weighs 7.26 kilograms; women’s weighs 4 kilograms. Two main techniques dominate: the glide and the rotational (spin) method. Both aim to maximize the speed of the shot at release while maintaining balance. Delivery height and angle also affect distance.
Training develops whole-body power, especially in the legs, core, and delivering side. Technical consistency is as important as raw strength. The event is one of the purest tests of explosive force in the athletics program.
A legal throw that flies past personal best markers is the reward for months of heavy, precise work.
