🌀 Cult

A religious group with unconventional beliefs and practices.

Cult

Sociologists and the public sometimes label a small religious group with novel beliefs and intense demand for loyalty as a cult. The term is contested. Scholars often prefer neutral language such as new religious movement, while popular usage carries strong negative connotations of manipulation or danger.

Groups called cults typically feature a charismatic leader, high levels of commitment, distinctive practices, and tension with surrounding society. Some remain small and short-lived; others evolve into recognized denominations. Historical examples show that today’s established religions were sometimes regarded as cults in their formative periods.

Concerns about coercive control, financial exploitation, or isolation from family fuel public suspicion. Accurate assessment requires attention to actual practices rather than mere novelty of belief. The word itself can obscure more than it reveals when used as a simple pejorative.

Careful description still matters more than the label.
