⏳ Scarcity

The fundamental economic problem of limited resources against unlimited wants.

Scarcity

Scarcity is the gap between limited resources and unlimited wants. It is the foundation of economics. If everything were abundant, there would be no need to choose. Prices, trade-offs, and opportunity cost all flow from scarcity.

Scarcity is not the same as shortage. A shortage is temporary, caused by a disruption. Scarcity is permanent. There is only so much land, oil, and time. Even water, which covers most of the planet, is scarce in usable form in many places.

Economies allocate scarce resources through markets, governments, or tradition. Each method has strengths and weaknesses. Markets respond quickly to changing demand. Governments can prioritize equity. Tradition preserves stability but resists change. No system eliminates scarcity. It only decides who gets what.
