💬 Word-of-Mouth

Informal communication about a product among consumers that influences purchasing.

Word-of-Mouth

A friend mentions a restaurant. A colleague recommends a laptop. Nobody paid for that recommendation, and that is exactly why it carries weight. Word-of-mouth is informal communication between consumers about products, services, and brands, and it shapes buying decisions long before any ad enters the picture.

Marketers treat it as both a goal and a measurement problem. They cannot buy word-of-mouth directly, but they can influence the conditions that produce it. Better products generate more of it. Poor service generates it too, just not the kind anyone wants.

What drives it

Digital channels amplified the speed. A single review or forum post can reach thousands of potential buyers overnight. Research firms track it through surveys, social listening, and net promoter scores. None of these capture the whole picture, because most recommendations happen in private conversations no tool can hear.

Brands that chase word-of-mouth through gimmicks usually fail. The reliable path is slower and duller: make something people actually want to talk about.
