🏉 Scrum Master

A facilitator for an agile development team.

Scrum Master

A team practicing Scrum needs someone to keep the process healthy. The scrum master is that servant-leader. The role coaches the team on Scrum practices, facilitates the Scrum events, and works to remove impediments that block progress. The scrum master does not manage the team in a traditional hierarchical sense; the team is self-managing.

Effective scrum masters understand both the framework and the interpersonal dynamics of the group. They protect the team from external interruptions during the sprint, help the product owner refine the backlog, and foster continuous improvement through the retrospective. The role requires patience, facilitation skill, and the ability to influence without formal authority.

When the scrum master role is weak, teams often fall back into old habits or become stuck on obstacles. When it is strong, the team gains the space and support to deliver value predictably and to improve its own ways of working. The scrum master is therefore a key enabler of the agility that Scrum promises.
