🤖 Autonomous Robot

A robot that operates without direct human control.

Autonomous Robot

An autonomous robot operates without direct human control. It senses its environment, makes decisions, and acts on them. A remote-controlled drone is not autonomous. A drone that maps a field, avoids obstacles, and lands itself is.

Autonomy is a spectrum. At the low end, a robot follows a fixed path and stops if it detects an obstacle. At the high end, a robot navigates unknown terrain, identifies objects, and plans complex tasks. Most commercial autonomous robots sit somewhere in the middle: self-driving floor scrubbers in airports, delivery robots on college campuses, and warehouse robots that navigate around people and each other.

Core capabilities of autonomous robots

The hard part is uncertainty. The real world is messy. People move unpredictably. Lighting changes. Surfaces vary. Autonomous robots use redundant sensors and conservative behavior to handle that uncertainty. When they cannot figure out what to do, they stop and ask for help. That is a design feature, not a failure. Full autonomy in all conditions remains rare. The robots that work best are the ones that know their limits.
