🪕 Folk Music

Traditional music passed down through generations.

Folk Music

Folk music belongs to the traditions of ordinary people rather than to trained professional composers. Songs and instrumental pieces are passed down by ear, often changing slightly with each generation or region. The subjects are everyday life, work, love, history, and community celebration.

Instrumentation tends to be portable and accessible: voice, fiddle, guitar, accordion, banjo, and various drums or pipes. Many folk traditions later influenced classical composers and popular styles. Field recordings and scholarly collections have preserved material that might otherwise have disappeared.

Contemporary folk musicians continue to perform traditional repertoire while also writing new songs in the same spirit. Festivals, clubs, and informal gatherings keep the music social and participatory. The boundary between folk and other genres is porous, yet the emphasis on communal ownership and oral transmission remains distinctive.

Listening to folk music often feels like overhearing a conversation that has been going on for centuries.
