Identifying stakeholders is only the start. Stakeholder management is the systematic process of engaging, communicating with, and influencing parties who can affect or are affected by a project or organization.
It includes analysis of interests and power, tailored communication plans, expectation setting, and ongoing relationship maintenance. Effective managers adjust frequency and content of contact to each stakeholder’s needs and influence. Silence toward important stakeholders is rarely neutral.
Stakeholder management consumes time yet prevents larger delays and political surprises. Transparency about constraints builds credibility even when every request cannot be met. Organizations that institutionalize stakeholder engagement make fewer avoidable enemies.
