A university is an institution of higher learning that awards degrees and conducts research. It offers undergraduate and graduate programs across many fields. Most universities include multiple colleges or schools, each focused on a broad area like arts, sciences, engineering, or medicine.
The modern university traces back to medieval Europe. Bologna, Paris, and Oxford set the template: a community of scholars with some autonomy from political and religious authorities. That autonomy remains a value, though funding and regulation have tightened the relationship between universities and governments.
Universities serve several missions. They teach students, produce new knowledge, and serve their communities. These missions sometimes conflict. A professor focused on research may have little time for undergraduates. A university chasing rankings may neglect local needs. Balancing the missions is a constant challenge.
