❓ Questioning

The technique of asking questions to promote thinking and learning.

Questioning

Questioning is a teaching technique built on a simple idea: students learn more when they have to think, not just listen. A good question opens a door. It pushes students to explain, connect, or defend an idea. A weak question asks for a fact that was just stated.

Teachers use many types. Closed questions check recall. Open questions invite analysis. Wait time matters too. After asking, a teacher who waits three seconds gets more hands and better answers than one who calls on the first student immediately.

Socrates built an entire method around questioning. He rarely lectured. He asked until his students reached a conclusion themselves, or discovered they had none. Modern classrooms use a similar approach, though time pressures push teachers toward coverage over depth.

I started using questioning techniques in my history class and the difference in participation was noticeable within a week. Kids who never raised a hand started offering opinions.

Is there a point where too much questioning just frustrates students who want a straight answer? Genuinely curious how teachers balance this.

My professor used to answer every question with another question and honestly it drove me up the wall at first. By the end of the semester I understood why though.

Skeptical that this is anything new. Socrates was doing this thousands of years ago. Good technique but hardly revolutionary.
