Technology-driven innovation in financial products and services.

Fintech

Fintech is technology-driven innovation in financial services. It is a broad term that covers mobile banking, peer-to-peer lending, robo-advisors, digital wallets, insurtech, regtech, and cryptocurrencies. The goal is to make financial services faster, cheaper, and more accessible. Sometimes it works. Sometimes it just adds another app to your phone.

Fintech companies have changed banking. Stripe makes it easy for businesses to accept payments online. Square does the same for small merchants. Venmo and Zelle make peer-to-peer transfers instant. Robinhood offers commission-free stock trading. Chime offers fee-free banking. Klarna and Affirm offer buy-now-pay-later financing. Each targets a specific pain point in traditional finance.

Banks have responded. Most large banks now offer mobile apps, instant transfers, and digital account opening. Some have acquired fintech companies. Others have built their own. The line between fintech and banking is blurring. Many fintech companies are not banks. They partner with banks to offer insured deposits and lending. That partnership model has risks. When Synapse, a banking-as-a-service platform, collapsed in 2024, thousands of customers lost access to their money.

Fintech is not without problems. Some products encourage overspending. Some have hidden fees. Some have weak consumer protections. Regulators are catching up, but slowly. The technology moves faster than the rules. That is both the promise and the peril of fintech.

Fintech has completely changed how I manage money. I use apps for budgeting, investing, and sending money. Rarely touch a traditional bank.

The category says banking but fintech is really its own category. It's tech companies doing financial services.

Regulation is the big question with fintech. Innovation moves fast but regulators move slow.
