🔩 Nacelle

Nacelle

Engines on modern aircraft do not hang exposed. They sit inside a nacelle, a streamlined housing that shapes airflow, protects the engine, and reduces noise. The nacelle also holds the thrust reverser and often the accessory gearbox.

Shape matters. The inlet must deliver smooth, slow air to the fan, even at high speed. The fan cowl covers the engine core, and the exhaust nozzle shapes the outgoing flow. Every contour is tested in wind tunnels and acoustic chambers.

Nacelle components

Composite materials now dominate nacelle construction, cutting weight compared to metal designs. Maintenance access panels and quick-release fasteners let technicians open the cowls on the ramp in minutes.

The nacelle is the housing around an aircraft engine. It's designed to be aerodynamic and to reduce noise.

The article is clear. A streamlined housing on an aircraft that encloses an engine. Simple but important in aerospace.
