💨 Airspeed

The speed of an aircraft relative to the surrounding air.

Airspeed

Aircraft do not care about speed over the ground. They care about speed through the air, because that is what generates lift and feeds the engines. Airspeed is the speed of the aircraft relative to the surrounding air mass, and it is the number pilots watch most closely.

Several versions exist. Indicated airspeed is what the cockpit gauge shows. Calibrated airspeed corrects for instrument and position error. True airspeed adjusts for altitude and temperature. Ground speed comes from navigation systems and differs from all of them.

Why the distinction matters

Aircraft can fly safely at very different ground speeds while the wing sees identical airflow.
