Not every manager shapes the whole enterprise. An executive is a senior leader responsible for major decisions that affect the direction, performance, and structure of the organization.
Executives typically sit at or near the top of the hierarchy—CEO, CFO, COO, division presidents, and similar roles. They allocate resources, set policy, represent the firm externally, and hold subordinates accountable for results. The time horizon of their work stretches further than that of front-line supervisors.
Effective executives integrate information from many domains and make choices under ambiguity. They also set cultural tone through what they reward and tolerate. The quality of the executive group largely determines whether strategy remains a document or becomes organizational reality.
