Profane

Religious language distinguishes the realm set apart for the divine from ordinary life. What belongs to ordinary life is called profane. The term originally means outside the temple.

Profane space, time, and objects are available for common use without special ritual precautions. The sacred, by contrast, demands reverence and restricted access. The boundary is maintained by rules about purity, speech, and behavior. Violation of the boundary constitutes sacrilege.

Modern secular societies expand the profane realm and shrink the publicly acknowledged sacred. Yet the distinction persists in residual form whenever people lower their voices in certain buildings or hesitate to treat certain symbols casually. Anthropologists and theologians continue to map how different cultures draw the line.

The profane is not necessarily bad; it is simply not holy.
