🆕 Primary Research

Original research conducted to collect new data.

Primary Research

Sometimes existing data are not enough. Primary research is the original collection of data for a specific purpose. Surveys, interviews, focus groups, experiments, and direct observation are common methods. The researcher designs the study, gathers the information, and analyzes it to answer a defined question.

Primary research is tailored to the exact needs of the project, so the findings are directly relevant. The drawbacks are cost, time, and the skill required to design and execute the study well. Bias in question wording, sampling, or interpretation can undermine the results if not carefully controlled.

Organizations commission primary research when secondary sources leave critical gaps—about a new product concept, a specific customer segment, or a local market. Combining primary and secondary research often produces the most complete picture. When done rigorously, primary research supplies the proprietary insight that competitors do not share.
