💎 Prestige Economy

A system where status is gained through generous giving rather than accumulation.

Prestige Economy

In a prestige economy, status is gained through generous giving rather than accumulation. The person who gives away the most earns the most respect. This runs counter to market logic, where wealth is measured by what you keep. But in many small-scale societies, hoarding brings suspicion and ridicule. Sharing is the path to influence.

The potlatch of the Northwest Coast is a classic example. A host who distributes blankets and canoes to hundreds of guests gains titles and reputation. The Kula exchange of the Trobriand Islands works similarly: men who circulate shell valuables build fame. In both cases, the goal is not to profit materially but to create obligations, alliances, and social standing. Prestige economies often coexist with subsistence production. People give away surplus, not the food they need to survive.

Key features

Prestige economies show that economic behavior is not universal. People value different things, and generosity can be a form of power.
