🌉 Aeroelasticity

The study of interactions between aerodynamic forces and structural deformation.

Aeroelasticity

Wings bend. They twist. Under the right conditions, those movements feed back into the airflow and grow worse. Aeroelasticity studies the interaction between aerodynamic forces and the elastic deformation of structures, and it has destroyed aircraft that were otherwise well built.

Two problems appear repeatedly. Flutter is an oscillation that can rip a wing apart in seconds. Divergence is a twisting failure where aerodynamic torque exceeds the structure's ability to resist. Both tend to strike at high speed, which is exactly when margins are thin.

Design countermeasures

The field sits between aerodynamics and structural mechanics. Neither discipline alone can predict the behaviour, which is why aeroelasticians work across both.
