📉 Advertising Elasticity

The measure of how changes in advertising spending affect sales volume.

Advertising Elasticity

Advertising elasticity is a ratio. It compares the percentage change in sales to the percentage change in advertising spending. An elasticity of 0.2 means a ten percent increase in spend produces roughly a two percent lift in sales. Useful, if the estimate holds.

The trouble is that elasticity shifts. It depends on the market, the product, the creative, and how competitors respond. A saturated category might show almost no response to extra spend. A new product in an underdeveloped market might show a strong one.

Practical limits

Analysts use elasticity to justify budgets and to argue against cuts. Treat it as a rough guide, not a law. The number is only as good as the data behind it.
