Rhythm

Rhythm is the pattern of sounds and silences in time. It encompasses the beat, the meter, the specific durations of notes and rests, and the way those elements interact to create forward motion or stasis.

A strong rhythmic identity can make a piece instantly recognizable even without its melody. Syncopation, polyrhythm, and changing meters add complexity and excitement. Different musical cultures organize rhythm in distinct ways, from the regular meters of much Western music to the intricate cyclic patterns of Indian classical music or West African drumming.

Performers internalize rhythm through counting, movement, and listening. A secure rhythmic foundation allows expressive freedom; without it, even accurate pitches fail to cohere. Rhythm is often the first element that draws listeners into the music and the last they stop feeling.

Clapping or tapping a rhythm is one of the simplest and most universal musical acts.
