單靠降雪並不構成暴風雪。官方定義要求持續風速至少達到每小時35英里，且能見度因降雪或吹雪而降低至四分之一英里或更低，持續時間至少三小時。

這種天氣狀況會造成能見度極低的白茫茫一片，地平線和天空融為一體。出遊變得危險甚至不可能。積雪會在數小時內掩埋道路和車輛。氣溫通常很低，但風才是將暴風雪演變成暴風雪的關鍵因素。

美國大平原和東北部地區最常發生此類事件，通常是由於強低氣壓系統將冷空氣南下所致。預警發布後，居民有時間儲備物資並避免出遊。

    We got hit by a blizzard last winter and were snowed in for three days. Beautiful to look at but dangerous to be out in.

    The definition is clear. Strong winds, lots of snow, low visibility. Not every snowstorm qualifies as a blizzard.

    People throw around the word blizzard for any big snowstorm but the meteorological criteria are specific.
