单靠降雪并不构成暴风雪。官方定义要求持续风速至少达到每小时35英里，且能见度因降雪或吹雪而降低至四分之一英里或更低，持续时间至少三小时。

这种天气状况会造成能见度极低的白茫茫一片，地平线和天空融为一体。出行变得危险甚至不可能。积雪会在数小时内掩埋道路和车辆。气温通常很低，但风才是将暴风雪演变成暴风雪的关键因素。

    We got hit by a blizzard last winter and were snowed in for three days. Beautiful to look at but dangerous to be out in.

    The definition is clear. Strong winds, lots of snow, low visibility. Not every snowstorm qualifies as a blizzard.
