🧑‍⚖️ Referee

An official who enforces the rules during a match.

Referee

In the middle of the action an official watches for infringements, signals decisions, and keeps the contest under control. That official is the referee. The referee’s authority allows the game to proceed fairly.

Duties include enforcing rules, managing time, dealing with misconduct, and communicating with players and other officials. Positioning and fitness matter because the referee must be close to play without interfering. Consistency and clarity of signals help players accept decisions even when they disagree.

Technology such as video review now assists in many sports, yet the referee on the field still makes the majority of real-time calls. Respect for the referee underpins the possibility of orderly competition. Good referees are almost invisible when the match flows; they become central when tight decisions arise.

Without a referee, most competitive sports would quickly lose structure.
