🦘 High Jump

An event where athletes jump over a raised bar.

High Jump

An athlete sprints in a curve, plants a foot, and rotates over a horizontal bar without knocking it down. That event is the high jump. The goal is simply to clear the greatest height.

The modern Fosbury Flop technique dominates: the jumper approaches on a curve, takes off from one foot, and arches the back over the bar to land on the shoulders in the pit. Earlier styles such as the straddle and scissors have largely disappeared at elite level. The run-up speed, takeoff angle, and body position at the peak determine success.

Competition begins at a modest height and rises in increments. Three consecutive failures at a height eliminate the jumper. The event rewards explosive power, timing, and spatial awareness. Records have climbed as technique and training have refined the margins.

Clearing a bar set above one’s own height remains one of athletics’ most striking sights.
