🏷️ Price

The monetary value assigned to a good or service in an exchange.

Price

A price tag looks simple. It is just a number. But that number carries information. It tells producers how much to supply and consumers how much to demand. It signals scarcity, reflects costs, and coordinates millions of decisions without anyone issuing orders. Friedrich Hayek called price a marvel of spontaneous coordination. It is also the subject of endless political fights.

Prices are set differently depending on the market. In competitive markets, no single buyer or seller sets the price. It emerges from the interaction of supply and demand. In monopolies, the seller sets it. In regulated markets, a government agency may set it. In auctions, bidders set it. Each mechanism produces different outcomes for efficiency and fairness.

Governments sometimes fix prices. Rent control keeps housing affordable for existing tenants but can reduce the supply of new rentals. Minimum wage laws raise pay for low-wage workers but can reduce hiring if set too high. Price controls on gasoline or food can prevent shortages in the short run but create long lines and black markets over time. The debate over prices is never just about economics. It is about who gets what, and who decides.
