🌍 Culture

The shared beliefs, practices, and artifacts that characterize a human group.

Culture

Culture is the shared beliefs, practices, and artifacts that characterize a human group. It includes language, religion, foodways, kinship rules, tools, music, and ideas about right and wrong. It is learned, not inherited. A child born anywhere can grow up speaking any language and following any set of customs. That flexibility is what allowed humans to spread across every habitable continent.

Anthropologists once treated cultures as bounded, distinct units. That picture has softened. People borrow, mix, and reinvent constantly. Trade routes, migration, and now digital media carry ideas across borders at high speed. Cultures are better imagined as conversations than as islands. They also contain disagreement. Not everyone in a group shares the same values, and struggles over meaning are part of what culture is.

Key properties

Culture is ordinary as well as exotic. It is how people greet each other, cook dinner, and argue about politics.
