©️ Copyright

The exclusive right to reproduce and distribute creative works.

Copyright

Creators of original works receive a temporary exclusive right to control certain uses of those works. Copyright is that legal right. It covers literary, artistic, musical, and certain other intellectual creations once they are fixed in a tangible form. The owner can authorize or prohibit reproduction, distribution, public performance, and the creation of derivative works.

Copyright arises automatically in most jurisdictions; registration is often optional but provides procedural advantages. The term of protection is long—typically the life of the author plus several decades. After expiration the work enters the public domain and may be used freely. Fair-use or fair-dealing provisions allow limited uses without permission for purposes such as criticism, education, and research.

In the digital era enforcement and exceptions remain contested. Copyright supports the economic incentive to create by allowing creators to monetize their work. At the same time, overly broad or lengthy protection can hinder follow-on creativity and access. The balance between those interests continues to shape legislation and court decisions worldwide.
