🧘 Flexibility

The range of motion in a joint or muscle.

Flexibility

A gymnast folds forward and places both palms flat on the floor without bending the knees. That range of motion is flexibility. It allows joints to move freely through their needed arcs.

Flexibility supports technique in sports that require large ranges—gymnastics, martial arts, swimming, and dance among them. It also helps athletes absorb force and reduces the risk of certain muscle strains. Static stretching, dynamic mobility work, and loaded movements in full ranges all contribute to improvement.

Excessive flexibility without matching strength can reduce joint stability. Balanced programs therefore develop mobility and control together. Individual differences in anatomy mean optimal ranges vary. Assessing sport-specific needs prevents both under- and over-emphasis.
