🧩 Brand Extension

Using an established brand name on a new product.

Brand Extension

Brand extension is using an established brand name on a new product. Apple makes computers, phones, watches, and music services. Virgin started with records and expanded into airlines, mobile phones, and financial services. The logic is simple: the new product borrows the trust and recognition of the old one.

A good extension fits the brand. It shares values, quality standards, or customer base. A bad extension feels random or cheapens the original. Colgate once launched frozen dinners. It did not last. The further you stretch, the more risk you take. If the new product fails, it can damage the core brand. If it succeeds, it can open new markets and increase revenue. There are two main types. Line extensions add a new item to an existing category, like a new flavor of soda. Category extensions move into a new category, like a clothing brand launching perfume. Both can work. Both can flop.
